Nicaraguan Geothermal Project Receives Positive Results From 30-Day Test

An update by Ram Power Corp. (TSX:RPG) regarding the San Jacinto phase I expansion project in Nicaragua, where the company conducted a 30-day performance test on the phase I unit. The test verified the plant’s ability meets its minimum generation capacity, as the phase I expansion required the production of 23,688 megawatt-hours in order to achieve certification.

Shuman Moore, Chief Executive Officer of Ram Power, said, "Our Nicaraguan project is progressing well. Completing the 30-day test of our 36-megawatt San Jacinto phase I unit with such a high availability, and so quickly after the plant's initial synchronization, demonstrates the high skill levels of our operations staff and the superior quality of the equipment."

The performance test showed that the plant could maintain 99.997% availability, while operating at the required 36 MWH net output from the phase I Fuji turbine, thus exceeding the requirements of the performance test. The expansion is now currently running at 39 MW (net), which is slightly lower than expectations for phase 1. This lower result is being attributed to temporary phase II steamfield piping construction activities, which are preventing the proper manifolding of all of the available steam at the site.

The company is currently completing the full integration of the steamfield gathering and injection systems required for both phase I and phase II operations. Upon completion of construction of both phase I and II, the result anticipated is the full 72-megawatt (net) output. At 39 MW, the current production is an improvement over the previous operation standard of 10 MW from the project.

The San Jacinto-Tizate geothermal project is located near the city of Leon, in northwestern Nicaragua, approximately 100 km north of the capital city of Managua. Long known for its geothermal resources, the San Jacinto-Tizate is one of the highest quality geothermal reservoirs being developed in the world. According to Ram, the concession has the potential to produce over 200 MW of power.
